Machines, Systems, and Us

Artistic representation of the feeling of being trapped within unseen boundaries in social structures and systems, each circles in different colours, sizes and marks represent uniquness of us in the systems.

Machines, structures, and infrastructures are everywhere, setting the rhythm to our lives like breathing air. As long as they maintain their rhythms, we don't see them.

We become frustrated, agitated, or distressed when this rhythm is disturbed. When a train breaks down, we are forced to look for alternative routes or surrender until it's fixed. A bridge dictates where to go to cross the river. When the Internet is down, our lives are put on pause these days.

Machines, structures, and infrastructures set the rhythms of our lives and behaviours and our minds are gradually conditioned to accommodate these invisible forces.

As our society shifted towards capitalism, we formed conceptual systems to bind people together and produce on a large scale. A capitalist system requires standardising our behaviours and lives in a conceptual system to maximise outputs and profits.

It reminded me of when I worked for multinational companies, where people were groomed for specific behaviours and ranked and valued based on their performance and output.

We live our lives, but these invisible forces influence how we feel, think, behave and act.

I felt that machines and systems created invisible boundaries around us; sometimes, we are stuck there without noticing them.
