Do you go to museums and galleries to see art? Or do you prefer to see art online?
When it comes to physical artwork, I prefer to see it in person at museums or galleries.
I visited the Musée Marmottan the other day, and the experience reinforced my preference.
As I walked into Monet's section in the museum, a painting of the port, people on boats, sunrise and the sun reflecting on the water greeted me. It took a while for me to realise that it was the 'Impression, Sunrise'.
I have seen this painting on the Internet many times, but the impression I experienced from the online image was not particularly strong.
I stood in front of the painting and felt the presence and energy of Monet through the brushstrokes, blobs of paint and layers of colours.
Through his brushstrokes, I sensed his hand and body movements. Through the blobs of paint, I visualised his brush running on the canvas.
Through the colours, I imagined how he mixed colours on his palette.
The connection with artwork deepens when I stand in front of them.
That's why I still like to see art in person.
